London 2016 – Hack the Heat Event Report

55 developers joined us at the Innovation Warehouse in London June 17-19th for a fun weekend of hacking and making, and in the end 12 projects were presented including several viable smartphone apps and maker solutions.

We mixed things up a bit this time with an interesting new set of challenges and prizes, and the results were really good. We changed the Grand Prize into a compelling app/business accelerator package with some cash and hardware to help the winner launch their app; Grand Prize winning team Vulcana will work closely with us to launch the app as an “Ultimate Outdoors” FLIR ONE app after the 12 week program ends.

We also offered up a challenge for several “target apps” in which we told developers about specific apps we’d like to see and the Bee Pro team presented what could become a very useful app for beekeepers to manage their hives and colonies. In addition, Bullitt officially kicked off the Cat S60 Early Developer Program at the event and sponsored a unique app challenge that was exciting and won by the “Milk Mate” app.

Special congratulations to the prize-winning teams, including:

· Grand Prize: Vulcana, the ultimate FLIR ONE outdoor app using AI and machine learning
· Best FLIR ONE Hack: Thermori-on, an entertainment app that uses thermal data as input to create musical tones so you can “hear” your environment
· Best Lepton Make: Biketilla, a Lepton make that serves as a blind-spot detector to eliminate car/bike collisions
· Best Cat S60 app: Milk Mate, an S60 app to manage cattle herd health
· Best Target App: Bee Pro, a FLIR ONE app for bee colony management

Our Friday night Superhero Thermal NERF Duel challenge contributed to the fun as an educational and immersive way to inspire participants with some of our own in-house “maker” solutions – Lepton stereoscopic 3D goggles and newly-made FLIR ONE-guided remote control NERF turrets.

It was awesome to hear from a participant that this was “The most fun hackathon I’ve ever been to!” Our most sincere thanks to everyone that participated. For information about the complete list of projects and the teams that submitted them, check out the Hackathon.io page. Hackathon.io
